NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service

About This Service

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service offers people greater choice and access when considering starting or continuing their current form of oral contraception. Our service provides confidential consultations and ongoing support for contraceptive pill users.

Important Information

This is an NHS service, so the supply of oral contraception will be exempt from any prescription charges. You do not need to be registered with a GP to access this service.

What We Offer

Our pharmacy contraception service includes:

  • Ongoing supply of oral contraception: Continue your current contraceptive pill
  • First-time prescriptions: Start the contraceptive pill for the first time
  • Confidential consultations: Private discussion with our trained pharmacist
  • Clinical assessment: Ensuring the medication is appropriate for you
  • Ongoing monitoring: Regular check-ups to ensure continued suitability

Who Can Use This Service?

You may be eligible for this service if you are seeking:

Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC)

From menarche up to and including 49 years of age

Progestogen Only Pill (POP)

From menarche up to and including 54 years of age

What to Expect During Your Consultation

During your confidential consultation, our pharmacist will discuss your contraceptive needs and medical history to ensure the most appropriate contraception is provided. The consultation will cover:

  • Your medical history and current medications
  • Previous contraceptive use and any side effects
  • Lifestyle factors that may affect contraceptive choice
  • How to take your contraception correctly
  • What to do if you miss a pill
  • When to seek further medical advice

Emergency Contraception

If you have had unprotected sex or there is a possibility that your contraception may have failed, we can also provide emergency contraception (the "morning after pill"). This service may be available free of charge where it is funded locally by the NHS.

Emergency contraception can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex, however the sooner you take it, the more effective it will be. Our pharmacist will provide a private consultation to ensure this is the right option for you.

Confidentiality and GP Communication

All consultations are completely confidential. We will only inform your GP practice that you have accessed the service with your consent. This helps ensure continuity of care while respecting your privacy.
