NHS Community Pharmacy Blood Pressure Check Service

About This Service
The NHS Community Pharmacy Blood Pressure Check Service supports risk identification and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Our service helps identify people over the age of 40 who have not previously been diagnosed with high blood pressure and refers those with suspected hypertension for appropriate management.
Why Blood Pressure Checks Are Important
High blood pressure significantly increases the risk of having a heart attack or stroke, but early detection and treatment can help people live longer, healthier lives. Cardiovascular disease is the second most common cause of premature death in England, affecting seven million people.
Did You Know?
One in four premature deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease. The NHS aims to prevent 150,000 strokes and heart attacks over the next ten years through early detection and prevention.
Who Can Use This Service?
We offer free blood pressure checks to anyone who:
- •Is over the age of 40
- •Has not previously been identified as having hypertension or a related condition
- •Has not had their blood pressure measured by a health professional within the previous six months
What Happens During Your Check?
Our community pharmacist will measure your blood pressure using professional equipment. Based on your readings, we will:
Normal Blood Pressure
We'll promote healthy behaviours to help you maintain good cardiovascular health.
High Blood Pressure
We'll either offer Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) if we have access or refer you to your GP.
Very High Blood Pressure
We'll urgently refer you to see your GP within 24 hours and inform your GP practice.
Low Blood Pressure
We'll provide appropriate advice and may refer you to your GP if there are concerns.
Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM)
If your initial reading shows high blood pressure, we may offer you 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. This involves wearing a small device that takes regular blood pressure readings throughout the day and night to get a more accurate picture of your blood pressure patterns.
Your GP Will Be Informed
All blood pressure readings are sent to your general practice so your medical records can be updated and appropriate action taken. This ensures continuity of care and helps your GP make informed decisions about your health.
